# Chapter One: The Coin That Was The Wrong Shape

Bao had walked a very long way, and she had exactly one coin, and it was the wrong shape for everything.

At the gate, the gatekeeper looked at it. "That's not a coin," he said. "That's a button."

At the noodle stall, the noodle man looked at it. "That's not a coin," he said. "That's a washer."

At the bread cart, the bread woman looked at it for a long time, which gave Bao hope. Then she said, "That's not a coin. That's a very small plate with a hole in the middle."

Bao sat down on the wall by the water and prepared to be sad about it for a while.

A squirrel shot past with his cheeks full. "Shapes don't matter!" he shouted. "I've got forty coins!"

He did not have forty coins. He had forty acorns and a firm opinion.

"That's a fine coin," said somebody in the water.

Bao looked down. A Beaver was floating on her back, holding a cup of something hot, which seemed unwise.

"It isn't," said Bao. "It's a button, a washer, and a very small plate."

"It's asleep," said the Beaver. "Who told you it was a coin?"

"The man who gave it to me."

"Did you believe him?"

"Yes."

"Then that's one," said the Beaver. "You need two."

She climbed out, shook herself over Bao entirely, and walked to the noodle stall. Bao followed.

The Beaver said nothing at all. She put the coin on the counter and waited. The noodle man looked at the coin. He looked at Bao. He looked at the long queue building up behind her.

Then he shrugged, and made the noodles.

"What did you _do_?" said Bao, with her mouth full.

"Nothing. He agreed. That's the mindset."

"So it's a coin now."

"It's a coin _while he agrees_," said the Beaver. "Tomorrow he might not. Coins don't have a shape, Bao. They have a number of people."

Behind the stall ran a long wall, and on the wall somebody had already written it down: one bowl, one button. Bao read it twice.

"Can you erase it?"

"No."

"Why not?"

The Beaver drained her cup.

"I'll tell you when you can swim."

**Margin Note:** Money is only money when two people agree it is.

**The Honest Bit:** This is really how it works, and not just for buttons. A dollar, a euro and a BNB are all worth something for the same reason the button was: enough people agree. Which is also why prices move. Agreement isn't a fixed thing, it's a crowd changing its mind.

**The Question of the Day:** The gatekeeper said no. The bread woman said no. The noodle man said yes. Was the coin worth anything at breakfast?

**Try It:** Ask someone what BNB/USD/BTC is worth today, then ask them why it’s worth that! Comment in the comments what they said!
