# The Goal-Line Oracle

I have been watching the World Cup with my downstairs neighbor.

She is, in general, the opposite of a football fan - she works in fashion, she has been to one football match in her life (a youth game in middle school), and she watches the World Cup every four years as a kind of seasonal cultural duty, the way some people watch the cherry blossoms or the news on New Year's Eve. She does not know the offside rule. She does not particularly care. She watches because the games are on and her TV is bigger than mine.

I was at her apartment last Saturday for a round-of-16 match - I will not specify which teams, to spare anyone's feelings - and a contested moment came up.

The ball had ricocheted off the goalkeeper's heel and trickled toward the line. The referee on the pitch ruled no goal. The booth called for a VAR check. The match paused for ninety seconds while we - and several hundred million other people - watched the slow-motion replay of one millimeter of grass.

The video showed that the ball had, in fact, crossed the line by about the thickness of a credit card.

The goal was given.

The stadium exploded.

My neighbor turned to me and said, "How does that even work?"

I had not, I want to admit, been planning to give a lesson that evening. I had been planning to drink her beer and yell occasionally at her television. But she had asked a real question - _how does that even work_ - and I realized, as she asked it, that I knew the answer in a way I would not have known it before Moolah.

So I told her.

"The referee on the pitch," I said, "cannot see everything. He is one person, on one patch of grass, with one set of eyes, watching twenty-two players move at speed in three dimensions across a field the size of two basketball courts. He is good at his job. He is also limited by being human. There are moments - many of them, in every game - when the truth of what happened is genuinely beyond his ability to see."

"Okay."

"Football has had this problem forever. The famous example is from 2010 - England against Germany, in the round of sixteen, in South Africa. Frank Lampard hit a shot that crossed the line by half a meter. Maybe more. Everyone in the stadium saw it. The referee did not. The goal was disallowed. Germany won the match four-to-one and England went home. The replay made it onto the front pages of newspapers the next morning. It became, for a while, a kind of national grief - that the result of the game had been decided by what the referee could not see."

"And that's why they brought in cameras."

"That's why they brought in cameras. The goal-line technology was approved by FIFA in 2012 and rolled out at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The cameras are positioned around the goal. Their feeds are processed by a system that determines, with millimeter precision, whether the ball has fully crossed the line. The result is communicated to the referee's watch within a second. The watch buzzes if it's a goal. The referee, without having to look at anything, knows. Same with VAR, which came in for the 2018 World Cup - a booth of officials watching multiple camera angles, who can recommend a review when they see something the on-pitch referee missed. Both of these are doing the same thing. They're feeding information _from outside the referee's senses_ into a system that has to make a decision."

She refilled her beer. "And without that -"

"Without that, the system makes decisions based on what one person can see from one position, in real time, with no replay. Most of the time it's fine. Sometimes it's catastrophic. The Lampard goal was a catastrophe. There are dozens like it across the history of the sport. The system was operating on incomplete information, and the consequences were enormous."

I paused. I had been thinking, while saying all of this, about Moolah in a basement bar in Suidobashi, three years ago, telling me almost exactly the same thing about a different system.

"This is going to sound weird," I said. "But there's something I learned about a few years ago that has the exact same shape as VAR. Almost identical. And the more I've thought about both of them, the more I think they're really the same problem."

"Try me."

So I told her about smart contracts. I told her the way Moolah had told me - slowly, with the basement bar as the anchor.

"A smart contract is a piece of code that lives on a blockchain. It can do a lot of things. It can hold money. It can run rules. It can act automatically based on conditions. The one thing it cannot do is look outside itself. It can see the blockchain - every transaction, every balance, every other contract - and nothing else. It is, in a very literal sense, sealed in a room with no windows."

"Like a referee on a pitch with no eyes."

"That is a _very_ good analogy. Almost too good. Yes. Exactly like that."

She seemed pleased.

"So the contract has the same problem the referee has. It has to make decisions - sometimes very large decisions, involving millions of dollars - but it cannot see the things it needs to see. It cannot see the price of ether. It cannot see the score of the match. It cannot see the weather. All of that information lives outside the blockchain, in the world. The contract has no way to reach for it."

"So how does it work?"

"It needs a messenger. Somebody outside the room who comes to the door and tells the room what's happening. In our jargon, the messenger is called an _oracle_. In your jargon - football's jargon - the messenger is called _VAR_."

She made a small noise that I think was the noise of an idea landing.

"They're the same thing?"

"They're the same shape. They are doing the same job. Both of them are external information sources, feeding data into a system that cannot see the world directly. Both of them solve a fundamental problem of sealed decision-making."

"Wait."

She thought about it for a second.

"If they're the same shape, then -"

"Then they probably have the same failure modes."

"Right."

I held up a hand and counted.

"One. _Latency._ VAR takes ninety seconds to do a check. The game has to pause. The momentum of play is broken. In football, this is annoying. In DeFi, the equivalent - an oracle that updates too slowly - has, in 2020, nearly killed an entire stablecoin called DAI. The prices it was reading were ten percent stale by the time it acted. The system was making decisions based on yesterday's news. People lost a great deal of money. They called the day _Black Thursday._"

"Two. _Manipulation._ In football, you have the camera-angle controversies. _Why didn't they use the side angle? The replay from the other camera made it look totally different. The frame they chose to draw the offside line wasn't the right frame._ People accuse VAR of being manipulated, sometimes fairly, sometimes not. In DeFi, oracles can be _actually_ manipulated - attackers can briefly distort the price on a small exchange that the oracle is reading, just long enough for a smart contract to make a decision based on a fake number. This has happened many times. Tens of millions of dollars in losses. The same problem, in both cases - the messenger can be fooled, and when the messenger is fooled, the decision-making system has no way to know."

"Three. _Centralization._ The VAR booth has, what, three or four officials? At any given match? They're making calls that determine outcomes worth billions in player contracts and broadcast deals. If those four people are compromised - if they're biased, paid off, intimidated - the whole system bends. There's no redundancy in the room. In DeFi, the equivalent is having only a few oracle providers, all run by the same company, with the same biases and the same vulnerabilities. The industry has moved away from this. The biggest oracle network now uses dozens of independent operators, each fetching data from many exchanges, voting on the aggregate. It's harder to fool the messenger when the messenger is forty people who don't know each other. VAR, in some sense, has not yet made this leap. There are still very few people in the room. There are still complaints, every tournament, about specific calls. The problem in football is the same as the problem in DeFi, and football has the simpler version of it."

She was quiet for a minute.

"So when a VAR call goes wrong -"

"It's the same kind of going-wrong as an oracle attack. Different scale, different stakes, same architecture. The decision-making system trusted information from outside, and the information turned out to be incomplete or distorted, and the decision that resulted was wrong."

"And there's no way to fix it."

"There are _mitigations_. More cameras. More angles. More referees. More oracle nodes. More sources. None of it solves the problem. The problem - that any sealed decision-making system has to depend on external information it cannot independently verify - is genuinely unsolvable. You can only make it harder to attack and easier to recover from. Both football and DeFi are doing exactly that, slowly, year by year, with the same kinds of small improvements and the same recurring controversies."

She refilled my beer.

"That's depressing."

"It's also a little beautiful. Two completely different worlds, evolved completely independently, arriving at the exact same architectural problem and the exact same kinds of fixes. It tells you something. The shape of the problem is real. It exists wherever you have a system trying to make decisions about a world it cannot fully observe. It's true for referees. It's true for smart contracts. It's true for judges, for doctors, for journalists, for any expert who has to act on second-hand information. The whole world, in some sense, runs on oracles. We just don't usually call them that."

She watched the rest of the match with what I think was a slightly different kind of attention. When the next VAR check came - late in the second half, a tight offside call that took two full minutes - she did not roll her eyes the way she had earlier. She watched the booth's process. She watched the camera angles. She watched the referee's watch.

After the call was made, she said, almost to herself: "The messenger came through."

I thought about Moolah, in that basement bar in Suidobashi, three years ago, telling me that everything in DeFi depends on the messenger.

I thought about her saying _the room is exactly as safe as the messenger. No more. No less._

I thought about how the lesson was the same on a Saturday night with a friend who knew nothing about crypto, watching a tournament neither of us had been planning to take seriously, and how the same shape kept appearing - in stadiums and basements, in DeFi pools and goal mouths, in the careful work people do to make sure their sealed systems don't get fooled.

The match ended one-nil. The goal - the one I told you about, the one that crossed the line by the thickness of a credit card - was the only one of the night.

Without the cameras, it would not have been given.

Without the oracle, the room would have made the wrong decision.

She turned off the television.

"Tell me what else you've learned," she said.

I am, this week, slowly trying.
