Nusty had a bird too.
Everybody knew this, because Nusty had told everybody.
He hummed his whistle at the bread cart. He hummed it in the queue at the gate. He hummed it at a heron who had not asked and did not care. He was worried he might forget it, so he set it to words, and the words were catchy, and by Thursday there were children in the market singing them too.
“You shouldn’t do that,” said Bao.
“Do what?”
“The song.”
“It’s a good song,” said Nusty.
“It’s your whistle.”
Nusty waved a paw. “Everyone here is nice.”
On Friday morning, his bird was gone.
It had not been taken out of a box. There was no broken latch, because there was no latch, because there had never been a lock on anything. Someone had made a sound, and the bird had done what birds do.
Nusty went to the gatekeeper.
The gatekeeper was very sorry. Sorry was the whole of what he had.
“Who took it?” asked Nusty.
“I don’t know,” said Moolah.
“Then find out.”
“I can’t. Nobody can. That is the entire point of the arrangement, and yesterday you liked it.”
Bao held out her own bird. “You can share mine.”
“He can’t,” said Moolah, gently. “That isn’t a thing that can be done.”
Nusty sat down in the middle of the market with his cheeks empty for once.
Here is the part Bao thought about for years afterwards. Whoever took the bird had not been clever. They had not picked a lock or solved a puzzle or crept about at night to steal it.
They had listened to a song, on a random Tuesday, in a queue, along with everybody else.
Nusty stopped singing after that.
It was the first quiet afternoon anyone could remember, and nobody enjoyed it.

Margin Note: A secret shared four times, is a secret zero times.
The Honest Bit: Real recovery phrases work like Nusty’s song. If somebody has your words, they have your assets, and there is no gatekeeper who can undo it. This is not because crypto is cruel. It is because there is deliberately nobody standing in the middle, which is the same reason nobody can freeze your account or refuse your trade. You get both halves or neither.
The Question of the Day: Nusty’s bird vanished on Friday. Name the day he actually lost it.
Try It: Count every place your recovery phrase exists right now. Photos, notes, screenshots, email, or texts to yourself. Every single one is somebody standing in a queue, listening to your song!
