Chapter Two: The Bird That Only Answers to You

The next morning, the Beaver gave Bao a bird.

It was small and grey and not very impressive, and it sat on Bao's paw looking at nothing in particular.

"Keep it safe," said Moolah.

So Bao did. She put it in a box, and the bird sat in the box. She found a better box with a lid, and the bird sat in that. Then she found a cage with a proper latch, and a padlock for the latch, and she was rather proud of the padlock.

"That's a good padlock," said Moolah.

"Thank you."

"It does nothing."

Bao stopped being proud of the padlock.

"Open it," said Moolah.

Bao opened it. Moolah leaned in and made a small sound, three notes, quiet, a bit flat on the last one,  and the bird stood up, crossed the cage, and stepped onto Moolah's paw.

Bao went cold all the way down.

"That's my whistle."

"You did it in front of me eleven times yesterday," said Moolah. "I wasn't even trying to learn it."

She held out her paw. The bird hopped back.

"Never let me do that again."

"But you gave it back."

"I chose to give it back." Moolah sat down on the wall. "That's the part I need you to hear. There was nobody standing behind me who would have made me."

"The gatekeeper…."

"Doesn't know the bird. Doesn't know you. Wouldn't know which of us was lying."

"Then what's the lock for?"

"Nothing," said Moolah. "There is no lock. There never was one. The bird isn't kept anywhere. It comes to the whistle. Yours, mine, anyone's."

Bao looked at the small grey unimpressive bird for a long time.

"So the bird isn't mine."

"The whistle is yours," said Moolah. "The bird belongs to whoever can make the sound."

Bao learned her three notes by heart that afternoon.

She said them to nobody. She didn't write them anywhere anyone could see. She didn't hum them at the market, and she didn't teach them to a single soul, not even to be friendly.

Down by the bread cart, a squirrel was humming.

Margin Note: Your key isn’t a lock on your things. It is your things.

The Honest Bit: Real crypto keys work exactly like the whistle. Yours is usually twelve or twenty-four words instead of three notes, but the rule doesn't change: whoever has the words has the coins. There is no gatekeeper, no support desk, no one who can decide you were the rightful owner. Moolah handed the bird back because she felt like it. That is genuinely the only reason.

The Question of the Day: Moolah gave the bird back because she chose to. Name one thing that would have forced her.

Try It: Find out where your recovery phrase is written down. Don't type it anywhere, don't photograph it, don't read it out. Just confirm you know where it is, and that nobody else does!
